Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition of anxiety which is triggered by a past event, short or long-term experience which typically displays itself through flashbacks, nightmares and high anxiety. It can create distance in relationships with others and moderately or severely impact daily function due to triggers. Some symptoms of PTSD include the following:

  • Being easily frightened (e.g. car backfiring triggers vet thinking it is a gunshot).
  • Nightmares.
  • Flashbacks.
  • Insomnia and fatigue.
  • Feelings of detachment from self and others.
  • Extreme anger.
  • Always feeling on guard in order to protect oneself.
  • Nervousness.
  • Sudden mood shifts.
  • Problems with memory, specifically related to event or experience.
  • Intrusive thoughts.

PTSD is a condition that can be experienced by anyone as a result of any event. However, we are more likely to see this in those who are:

  • Veterans who have been in combat war.
  • Sufferers of sexual or physical trauma.
  • Sufferers of long-term abuse.
  • Witnesses of, or directly have been in an accident.
  • Witnesses of, or have been in a disaster (natural or man-made).
